If you grew up in Sweden in the 1970s and 1980s, you couldn't escape seeing and being influenced by the hero from Tärnaby. The entire country seemed to pause for a few minutes as Ingemar Stenmark prepared to attack the slopes.
In classrooms, TV sets were wheeled in, or students gathered in the library for a few magical minutes. At work, offices were quiet, with the only sound being the commentary from Swedish TV. It's no surprise that people in Sweden, young and old, wanted to ski, and the ski industry grew in line with the increasing interest in slalom led by the legendary Ingemar Stenmark.
When the idea to open a restaurant in St. Anton arose, we began discussing how important skiing has been for us, not just for us but also for our families, our children, and hopefully even for our grandchildren in the future. This is something we share with many people not only in Sweden. It felt very natural to celebrate and name the restaurant after our childhood hero, Ingemar Stenmark. 1978 marks Ingemar's most successful year. He won the overall World Cup three times in a row in the seasons 1975/76, 1976/77, and 1977/78. He then had several years where he finished second. He also won eight slalom World Cups (1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, and 1983) and seven giant slalom ones (1975, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1981, and 1981). No other alpine skier in the World Cup has won as many individual races. The 1978/79 season was the most successful for the Swede when he won thirteen races. He notably won all ten giant slalom races. In Jasna in 1979, he won the giant slalom with a margin of 4.06 seconds. He was also a successful championship skier with several Olympic and World Cup gold medals.
We named our establishment 1978 to pay tribute to what Ingemar has meant to us and how this has directly or indirectly influenced us and many of today's skiers.
Thank you, Ingemar, and a warm welcome to 1978.

Jonas has skied in most parts of the world and has completed a total of 20 seasons worldwide, including a remarkable 17 seasons in St. Anton. During a season in Argentina, he was involved in the opening of a Scandinavian restaurant.
There are few peaks in St. Anton and its surroundings that he has not climbed up and skied down from. For those interested in the mountains, he has skied down from Patteriol and Eisenspitze, among others. If you meet Jonas at the bar, I'm sure he will be happy to share more about his skiing adventures both in St. Anton and around the world.
Aside from skiing, Jonas has a deep love for his three children and Maria, who was part of the Austrian national snowboard team and was literally born under the lift in Stuben.
Lenzi was born and raised in St Anton at Hotel Fahrner. During the winters, he got to know many Swedes who came down to work during the season in St Anton. It was during one of these winters that he met his great love, Cecilia. When the snow had melted and the season was over, Lenzi headed to Sweden for the first time, where he sought a job at a restaurant, and the rest is history.
In Lenzi's family, there is a rich history of skiing. Apart from the connection to St Anton, Lenzi's father, Karl Fahrner, was the piste chief at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. In the mid-50s, Karl was also a private ski instructor for Jackie & John F. Kennedy when he ran a ski school on Whiteface Mt. in Lake Placid. The love for skiing naturally came through his father Karl, and Lenzi competed in slalom in his youth. When his father Karl was the piste chief during the Kandahar races in St Anton and knew the coach of Phil and Steve Mahre, Lenzi also had the opportunity to train with these giants, but the highlight was training with Ingemar Stenmark.
Today, Lenzi runs a restaurant outside Malmö in southern Sweden where he serves well-prepared Scandinavian food. His interest in food largely stems from memories of his mother Maria's Austrian cooking, but also from his travels around the world where different cultures and their gastronomy have inspired him. In addition to the restaurant in Sweden, Lenzi runs a Chalet in St Anton together with his wife Cecilia and their two children.
Skiing has always been a significant part of Pierre's life. He started skiing in the mid-70s in Åre with his parents and friends. Just like many in Sweden at that time, Ingemar Stenmark was his main source of inspiration, and Pierre indeed had a blue and yellow ski suit along with the iconic Stenmark hat.
Until 2018, skiing mainly consisted of one or two trips per year. After finding an apartment in St. Anton, skiing has become increasingly important, leading to ski trips to various places such as Canada, Kamchatka, Turkey, Abisko, and many more. However, the base for skiing remains in St. Anton, a place loved by both him and his family. The family consists of three sons and Pia. Two of the sons have done a season in St. Anton, and Pia has done a season in Lech. As you can tell, there is a lot of love for skiing here as well.
